Kifle (a.k.a. Kifli, Hungarian Walnut Cookie)

Kifles

Every year we had to make kifles. Mom's Hungarian neighbor gave her the recipe. Everyone loves them. (The teachers waited like vultures when I brought them for school bake sales.)

Ingredients:

Kifles
8 Ounce Cream Cheese   Cream
3 Tbsp Sugar
1 Cup Butter
2 Cup Flour   Add, then chill overnight
12 tsp Salt
Filling
8 Ounce Walnuts   Grind walnuts, then mix
1 Cup Sugar
12 tsp Vanilla Extract   Add
14 Cup Milk   Hot milk to bind; stir in.

Roll dough out thin ~1/8" cut out with 3" cutter.* Drop 1 tsp nut mix on circle, roll up and pinch. Nut mix will puff. Bake 350 degrees approximately 13 mins. Dust with Powder sugar when cool. * for dainty cookies use 2x3" diamond shape cutter. Drop 1/2 tsp nuts on. Roll up long points and pinch. Bake 9-12 minutes until golden on bottom.
