Anise Drop Cookies

I saved Christmas cookie recipes from women's magazines from the 1960's up to the present. This is one of those.


1 Each Egg
12 Cup Sugar
1 Dash Salt
12 Cup Flour
1 tsp Anise Seed
34 tsp Lemon Zest
2 Drops Anise Oil   or 1/4 tsp Anise extract

Beat egg until light. Set aside. Sift sugar, salt, and flour into mixing bowl. Stir in anise seed and lemon zest. Add egg and anise oil, and then mix well. Drop heaping 1/2 teaspoonfuls onto a WELL buttered (do NOT use PAM) baking sheet leaving 1" between cookies. Let stand overnight or at least 12 hours at room temperature. Bake 300 degrees 10-12 minutes until done inside and tops just begin to tan. They will form 2 layers, with the top resembling frosting.
